Announcements/ Goals Group
The goals group peer mentoring encourages participants to discuss personal goals and provide weekly progress reports. The group of peers then assists with ideas to achieve each participant’s goal. The group follows-up on weekly benchmarks and progress towards long-term goals. Through achieving weekly goals, confidence is built and long term goals seem more attainable
Art History
Provides consumers the opportunity to broaden their minds by learning of different eras of art in order to inspire and create their own art identity.
Art Technique and Application
The art application training includes trainings in variety of techniques such as: perspective, color wheel knowledge, shadowing, and texture. Participants apply gained knowledge when using charcoal, acrylics, wax, and clay.
BIG (Brain injury support group)
The brain injury support group provides an outlet and helps participants to realize that he or she is not alone -- that there are other people who have the same issues. This is often a revelation, and a huge relief, to the person with brain injury.
Book Club
The SCIL Book Club groups promote a variety of learning experiences. Discussing books helps to reinforce thoughts and enable the retention of information better. The book club increases communication and social skills. Participants learn to listen to different points of views and different ways of expression. Consumers learn to "discuss and disagree", to express one’s self appropriately and accept disagreements without taking it personally, and avoid resorting to emotional arguments. It teaches consumers to be both honest and yet tactful, which is a difficult but extremely valuable skill that can be used in other arenas such as community, work, business, and family life.
Community Outings
Community outings are taken for to increase community awareness, social and transportation skills. So far we have gone bowling, visited the Ringling Museum, toured Jungle Gardens and went dolphin sighting on the Labarge cruise.
Computer Training
Participants learn a variety of topics for personal and vocational purposes such as: Word, Excel, Email, Power point, Publisher Map Questing, internet, address label, print shop, card making.
Cooking and Nutrition
These trainings create awareness in nutrition and provide a variety of simple recipes using healthy substitutes, which could be used in every day life. Consumers with developmental delay have benefited in learning, identifying, and associating required measurement tools to complete recipes.
Creative Writing
Often people can not control the twist and turns life gives us. The creative writing workshop allows consumers an opportunity and avenue by which they can not only control the world they create, but express themselves creatively and be able to bring their ideas, hopes and dreams to life.
Disability/Agency Awareness
The importance of disability and community agency awareness is to promote services that would most benefit to people with disabilities. There are many programs and resources in our community that people may not know about or completely understand. People with disabilities deserve to go to school, work, volunteer and participate in community activities. Select presenters will increase awareness of programs and services in Sarasota and Manatee Counties that will help consumers achieve their goals.
Employment
The employment workshops increase consumers’ skills and awareness in: employment etiquette, employment discovery through job search, cover letter and resume writing workshops, employment marketing, networking and interviewing skills. Participants have actively looked for employment, been on job interviews, followed up with potential employers, and some have already found employment.
Fitness
Classes are offered on meditation, relaxation, dance, chair exercises, proper stretching techniques.
Helpers and Achievers Youth Transition Program
The Helpers and Achievers Transition Youth Program was created in partnership with parents, young adults, and the SCIL Transition Center due to growing concern of needed independent living and transition skills for youth with disabilities. The youth program includes students or recent graduates of Sarasota and Manatee County. The presence of diversity is prevalent, as the members are of various household incomes, disabilities, and educational backgrounds: home schooled, private, and a wide variety of public schools found in both counties. The youth voted on the name of: The Helpers and Achievers Transition Youth Program because their dedication to work as a team to help each other to achieve in spite of their varying disabilities.
Literacy
We have a variety of consumers that need to increase literacy skills in money identification, money management, word association for everyday life, and basic reading, writing, and math skills. This workshop also offers addition assistance to those attending GED classes.
Movie
The Transition Center presents one movie at the end of each workshop week.
Self – Advocacy
The purpose of the Self-Advocacy workshop is to increase problem solving, confidence and self-advocacy skills. Consumers are given or provided real life situations, break up into groups or individually to find solutions. Consumers share their solutions either through group discussion or through role playing.
Sign-Language
The sign language workshop provides the human interaction and reinforcement needed to build confidence through new communication skills. This workshop is offered in partnerships with The Community Center for the Deaf and Hard of Hearing (CCDHH). The training is a great for beginners or those seeking to practice already gained skills for personal or vocational purposes.
Spanish
Spanish for those seeking to learn a second language for sociability or to become more competitive in the job the market continues to increase in attendance. Caregivers have also been staying for the Spanish trainings and have said they have been working on Spanish at home.
Typing Skills
The Typing workshop assists persons seeking to increase typing skills for personal or vocational purposes.
